The New York Yankees used a passive aggressive approach to push Alex Rodriguez to agree to an early retirement. The Yankees will not have to go to such measures with CC Sabathia.

The Yankees have rocketed into a transformation of its roster since they began trading assets before the Aug. 1 deadline - Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller and Carlos Beltran - arguably their top players are all playing elsewhere now. The Yankees did not see a space for Rodriguez, inked through the 2017 season, and let him know by eliminating him as a daily option weeks ago.

Sabathia simply needs to avoid a major shoulder injury between now and the end of the season in order to set off a vesting option worth $25 million for 2017. The hitch for Sabathia, and the escape for the Yankees, is a $5 million buyout, which cannot be ignored by executives. Is a buyout of the southpaw's vesting option for 2017 coming in the offseason?
